“The Lector instituted to proclaim the readings from Sacred Scripture, with the exception of the Gospel. He may also announce the intentions of the Universal Prayer…” (GIRM 99)
The proclamation of the Word of God is truly a service to the Church. Here at Holy Family Church we live by “The Word of the Lord,” and want to ensure we recall, revive and renew our congregation with the teaching of our Lord.
The role of a Lector is an important one as they act as a messenger in bringing the living Word of God to the liturgical assembly. When they are proclaiming the word at the ambo and once the reading has been read, they look up at the assembly, pause and then say those five beautiful words, “The Word of the Lord.” Something wonderful has happened, we have once again heard God reveal the divine intention to love, redeem and reclaim us.
The requirements to becoming a Proclaimer of the Word of God (Lector), is to be a Baptized and Confirmed Catholic, fifteen years of age or older. They meet by-weekly for training and practice.
